In this hands-on foray, community mycologist Skyler Bright Fly-Wilson guides participants through the art of reading alpine habitats and documenting the complex fungal networks within them. We will train our eyes to spot critical forest indicators, tracking how large-scale weather patterns filter down into local microclimates, tree canopies, and moisture-holding terrain features.
As we explore regional species, the focus shifts to the power of citizen science. Participants will learn how to look closely at symbiotic forest relationships and capture high-fidelity observations that capture the full ecological context. This foray is designed to sharpen your field identification skills, deepen your understanding of forest ecology, and teach you how to turn casual discoveries into high-quality data that supports long-term environmental stewardship.
Where to MeetMeet‑Up Location is a dirt lot off W HWY 145 Spur, just outside the town of Telluride, right past Butcher Creek Drive on the south side of the highway. Blue Pin marks the spot.
Arrive at the Lot at 10:45 AM. We encourage you to arrive a little early to meet your foray leader and your fellow foragers. TMF does not provide transportation, so carpooling is encouraged to help groups stay together.
Be Prepared
Please come ready for changing mountain weather with:
- Good footwear
- Water and snacks
- Layers or rain gear
- A basket or paper bag for collecting mushrooms
All foray groups will have a First Aid–certified volunteer present.

During sign‑up, you’ll acknowledge our Release from Liability, Photo Release, and Code of Conduct. Each person may register for one foray and one special event.
