About me
Joel Penner is a National Geographic-featured documentary filmmaker based in Winnipeg, Canada. His work delves into the beauty of mortality and decay seen through the unique perspective provided by timelapse photography. His most recent short film Wrought has screened at over 65 film festivals around the world, receiving 17 awards as well as being featured on CBC Gem. It is in a permanent exhibit about fungi at the Museo Interactivo Mirador in Santiago, Chile and is currently slated for another one which is in development.
He is currently working on the film tentatively entitled Rebirth, a short film exploring the interconnectedness of nature and the challenge of finding hope amidst the climate crisis.
Joel has been a community media arts educator for youth through various organizations since 2012. He has taught a multitude of photographic processes including, stop motion, pinhole cameras, timelapse photography and photographic composition. Through his education and outreach Joel seeks to foster community and inspire students to develop their own unique perspective and artistic voice.
